Switch and Maestro are both kinds of debit card, whose individual histories have become intertwined in recent years. Switch was the brand name of a type of debit card used by banks in the United Kingdom. With its distinctive green background and black and white semi circles, it adorned the plastic of many a UK bank account holder until very recently.
Meanwhile, Maestro was a debit card service owned by the American financial giant MasterCard. While the self-named MasterCard is the worldwide credit card brand, Maestro was introduced in 1992 as the name behind its international debit card offering. It was intended to act as a rival to Visa’s Debit card. In effect, Switch was a UK only brand, while Maestro tended to be used more widely internationally. In recent years, the decision was taken to rationalise this discrepancy, so the Switch name has largely disappeared. It has been slowly merged with its international brand name stable mate Maestro (both owned by MasterCard). In 2011, the merger became effective, and no further Switch branded cards were issued. The brand suffered a slow death: as existing cards expired, they were replaced with the new Maestro branding.
Ironically, Maestro is now suffering the same fate. Very few are now issued, as the brand has been superseded by the new Debit MasterCard, and many of the major British banks switched (no pun intended) to using the Visa Debit brand during this transition period, so that the Maestro name slowly began to disappear from the British financial scene. This process is now almost complete, as only a very few of the smaller banks still use the Maestro name.
